Bringing Durka Back November 27, 2009

It’s been my plan for a while to relaunch my old filter avoiding website tehdurka.info. As my most sucessful website ever, it’s demise was quite unfortunate. At the point of taking it down it had received over 400,000 hits during it’s lifespan, not massive on internet scale but certainly something for me. Of course, if it ever did get especially popular I would probably run into trouble anyway due to it appearing on the radar of school and workplace filtering technology. A few thousand hits a day was quite enough for me.

I can’t entirely remember why I shut it down, probably to do with the hassle of juggling free providers to keep my costs down to a minimum. In order not to run up massive bandwidth costs (my host, nearlyfreespeech.net, operates on a pay-what-you-use system with a high level of transparacy in their operation, I would reccomend them for anyone needing a cheap place to host a low bandwidth/storage site) I will be using free web hosting providers wherever I can, a slightly dubious practice but if they’ll let me hotlink then hotlink I shall. Most are very limited in terms of both space and bandwidth so it’s quite a bother juggling it all. But I’ll do it again, to keep myself occupied.

My new incarnation of Durka is named Malarky and is currently hosted as part of this website. Depending on what happens, I may give it it’s own subdomain or possibly get some unlimited bandwidth hosting for it. Of course, that’s a point where it gets worryingly popular and could possibly fail because of it. There’s also issues of copyright on the games I’m hosting, I have a very open takedown policy and I think most game makers are mostly interested in people playing their game rather than making money but I’m sure there are some out there who only want their game on a specific site and I’ll respect that provided that I’m aware. There are of course lots of ways for flash games to make money irrespective of what website is hosting them, mochi ads for one.

Hopefully my good faith will keep me clear of any trouble, and it should improve my programming skills as a by product which is always positive. So, if you’re in need of entertainment at school or work (obviously not during a lesson, wouldn’t want to ruin your education) then head on over to Malarky and get playing. I will be adding lots more games over the coming weeks to get it back up to the level that Durka had when I shut her down.

Yes, I deleted the Happenings category. It was getting out of hand. None of the other categories could possibly compete with the great monolith that was happenings. As such, it’s gone. The fact is I rarely post about anything that isn’t a happening so really it’s just a bit redundant.

I get the feeling the happenings category might get a bit out of control, I seem to have used it on every post (or close) since I revived the blog. I need to just talk about something random that doesn’t involve any happenings (which is basically a category I use for stuff that happens) but I’m not sure if I can.

Upgraded to WordPress 2.5 April 2, 2008

I was kinda worried about the whole upgrade process, it’s not something I’ve done before and I figured something like this had the potential to be quite nasty but it seems to have gone off alright. I guess those crazy wordpress creating cats are still proving themselves to be kings of the blogging software platform (if that’s what you wanna call it).

I’ve got to say, the new dashboard does look rather spiffy (I think I may have slightly stolen that phrase, but it rocks so what the heck) and I’ve also installed a couple of plugins just for kicks. I’m probably not going to go about customizing the page as much as I did in the past, keep things a bit more minimalistic.

I should probably start making some WoW related posts soon since I said that I would and some more random bits of music stuff. I currently don’t have any working headphones so I’m deprived of entertainment whilst walking to and from school, such musical deprivation is teh suck.

Yes, it has taken me a LONG time since the host switch to get this place back online, I don’t think it really matters that much though given that no one really read this blog anyway. I was probably going to just keep it dead forever but recently I’ve gotten a bit of a writing bug again. I think this time around I will try to be more organized, my posts will generally focus on the world around me, the music I’m into, world of warcraft stuff and also bits about my life.

I’ve just backed up what posts I could from an sql dump I had but its not really worked properly so I’m not really sure what I’m going to do about that, especially since what I thought of as some of my better posts have been lost in the process somewhere. If I can’t get it to work out I’ll just start again afresh. Edit – I do seem to have most posts back now although none of them have a category and some make no real sense now, I think I’ll have a bit of a sort through and just keep the still relevant ones.

Anyways, hopefully with a bit more focus I can conjure something of use out of this blog again – we’ll see how it goes.
